NOTE:

In the video about Dinah Washington, I mention that she took mercury shots to keep her weight down. One friend suggested that she was "crazy". However, here is the best explanation of her temperament.

Mad hatter disease is a disease of the nervous system caused by mercury poisoning.

The name refers to the effects of chronic mercury exposure on hatters who had to work with mercury-treated fur and felt. It was an occurrence in the 1800s. Mercury was once used in the making of hats. This is known to affect the nervous systems of the hatter, causing them to shake and seem insane. Mercury exposure can cause aggressiveness, irrational behavior and mood swings. [Wikipedia]

Reviews:

I attended this first of the Lauderhill Jazz Series and it was an awesome night of live entertainment. This was just one of the many OFF THE CHAIN performances that night. We went from finger popping, to laughing, to hand clapping, to cheering and crying. It was a wonderful flashback of familiar and new material, like "Treat Me Right ". Thanks Joan again for being such an enthusiastic entertainer. -- LH

Oh What A Night! The music was inviting, with its hypnotic toe tapping rhythm. Throughout the room, smiles adorned the faces of those in attendance, as the music delighted their ears and the woman behind the voice not only sang to the crowd but entertained them. The voice singing in tune with the music was the heartfelt sound of Jazz itself, the amazing Joan Cartwright. Her performance that night, I shall remember for years to come. Never have I been so delighted to witness such an amazing Singer, Songwriter and Entertainer. For those looking for great entertainment in the realm of real Jazz, don’t hesitate to take in one of Ms. Cartwright’s performances listed on her website – www.joancartwright.com - and then sit back and enjoy the show! Sincerely, Kim Bowman
